Live Simply 2020: January mantra

It doesn’t matter what goals or resolutions you set, dreams you launch, ideas you create, or relationships you make; it is inevitable that at some point or other, you’re going to screw it up.

I know, I know; it’s the first month of the year new–of the new decade!–and the blankness of the slate laying before us is so sparkly white that my hinting at a blemish may make you cringe. Only, it’s the truth. Your track record will not be perfect. Your newly adopted good habits may be difficult to incorporate into your daily life. Those budding romances may turn out to be as solid as dust.

But the glory does not go to the one who gets on that proverbial equine once, friend, but again, and again, and again. Back up on it after you’ve fallen or been knocked off. Back up after you’ve elected to recede into couch-loafing and pouring potato chips directly from the bag into your mouth, a kind of keg of spuds, for three days in a row. Back up into action after having your heart broken, after letting your house become a mess.

I’m going to remind you of a true but very boring fact: few worthwhile pursuits are effortlessly achieved. The test of your character isn’t your ability to try once, but to persist. It is necessary that you cultivate in yourself the strength to recover, ever quicker. To bend and not to break. To learn and not to be dissuaded. To develop an internal spring that, whenever it is collapsed, compels itself immediately, with equal ferocity as the first time, to bound back into form.

This January, this new month of the new year of the new decade, resolve to be resilient.
