Weekend Assignment: Home/ Life Quick Reference Guide (Free Download!)

February 11, 2016

There are so many details we need to recall on a daily basis. With advancing technologies and booming populations comes the need for further delineation, for tighter security measures, for greater variety of offerings in the marketplace.

my weekend plans now officially include doing this--making a home/life quick reference guide aka cheat sheet.

I mean, when I was growing up I’m pretty sure we didn’t need to use an area code when calling a local number. And then over time my area code was changed from 810 to 248. Fast forward a few more years and you needed to use an area code when calling any number. And a few years later, your phone call wouldn’t reach anyone if it didn’t have a “1” before the area code. This is really neither here nor there, especially given how few people we actually manually dial these days, except that I guess I felt like talking about my area code journey just then.

The point is: there are so many codes and combinations and classifications that we need to call up everyday. And whether it’s about our memories becoming lazy or the digits and combinations and particulars of our lives exceeding the abilities of our memory, or a combination of the two, most of us spend considerable time rifling through files, papers, and emails on a constant basis in order to locate whatever detail we need. A detail that we probably searched through our things to locate yesterday. And the day before, and the month before that.

Chime in here–you’ve done/are doing that, right?

What if you took a block of time to locate any and all such household details that, upon reflection, you realize you’re constantly needing and constantly searching for? Details like what batteries your tv remote needs, what model your nespresso machine come capsule refill time, your wifi password, and so on. What if you collected that information in one place–a place that was kept in a handy spot for you?

What if I made it even easier by giving you a starting point? (Because once you’ve begun, continuing is so much easier.)

my weekend plans now officially include doing this--making a home/life quick reference guide aka cheat sheet.

Consider the assignment started.

But please don’t let me be the boss of you–make your own, make it digital, go with what works and matters to you and just please, pretty please, whatever you do, Live it Simply.

This is brilliant! And as you’re going along, maybe throwing away the stuff you don’t even remember what it is?! (What do you do with those little odds & ends that eventually you figure out is like the most important battery for your speakers?!) My roommate and I do something similar to this and it’s on the side of the fridge so it’s not glaring at you, but you know where it can easily be accessed.

I use OneNote for everything, especially things like user names & passwords – and prescriptions & dosage (because the docs always want that and I never had it!) That way I can pull it up on any device wherever I am.
