Monday’s Meditation: On The Quick Fix

January 13, 2014

In my experience, the quick fix nearly always ends up costing you more money, hassle, and stress than would have the version you actually needed or wanted to begin with.

Those things you buy cheaply when you know all the while their quality is inferior to the version you really desire; the handoffs you take from generous loved ones that may fill a temporary void, but ultimately aren’t what you would have chosen for yourself; the desperation of a juice cleanse to change your body when what’s really called for is regular exercise; quick fixes are half-hearted attempts to change or pursue anything, really.

It isn’t that what you should aim for is the most expensive or involved option. But if what you want are truly pleasure-inducing, life-serving, miraculous results, you are, in some sense, required to get your hands dirty, pay a sum substantial enough to make you really think through the purchase, and moreover, put in the work.

Work here does not refer to struggle, as is so often thought. It isn’t about toiling away in a state of chronic suffering. It’s love, applied to any goal with consistency and with striving.

If it’s a matter of money, save it up so you can spend it on the pair of boots you really want, rather than buying three cheap pairs along the way, none of which actually bring you happiness. If it’s a matter of time and energy, be discriminating in what you pursue and take on. A few things done well and done with goodness are better than many things done acceptably, done passably.

Thank you… Quick fixes abound and promise so much for all of our wants and needs. The challenge you lay before us, is perhaps, really what we need to hear on this start of a new year filled with untouched possibilities. Possibilities of how we may grow and fully realize our unique and greatest potential with each choice we chooose, and how we tackle those choices. Rolling up sleeves and “doing the work” is what this whole journey is about.
Keep up the good work and these wise words Miss Annie!
