5 Simple Closet Upgrades
Last week we talked simple bathroom upgrades. Today the closet is taking its turn with these 5 ways to instantly make yours look and feel less like a fabric graveyard and more like a well-tended garment garden.
Let’s get to upgrading then, shall we?
Instead of:
Letting your folded sweaters and shirts topple and converge into inseparable blobs of fabric…
Upgrade to:
Shelf dividers! These are an extremely handy tool for keeping your folded, shelf-residing clothing neat. Think of these as lines drawn in a parking lot. Without them, you’d end up with cars facing every which way, an unintelligible mess. But with them, you have yourself bona fide parking spaces.
Try: Spectrum Shelf Divider Large // Axis Shelf Dividers, White
Instead of:
Keeping your shoes in their original boxes, which, unless you only wear one shoe brand, can look cluttered all together, and can make remembering what shoes you have and thus wearing said shoes more of a struggle…
Upgrade to:
A uniform system that provides for minimal visual disorder and maximal footwear visibility. These clear, plastic shoe boxes are always affordable and always a win.
Try: The Container Store’s shoe box
Instead of:
Cultivating a museum of mis-matched hangers (I don’t feel the need to say any more on this front)…
Upgrade to:
Uniform hangers. Preferably those that take up the least amount of space and that caress your garments with a comfortable, non-slip finish. Just do it, seriously. You’ll be amazed at how much better everything becomes instantly. In your closet and in your whole life.
Try: Closet Complete Ultra Thin No Slip Velvet Suit Hangers, Black, Set of 50
Instead of:
Letting the contents of your drawers run amok (again, I don’t feel the need to say more, since I know you know what I’m talking about…)
Upgrade to:
Closet drawer dividers. You can go front to back or side to side or you can go section tray inserts, but you definitely can’t go home unless you get these first. That’s how that expression goes, right?
Try: Dream Drawer // Deep drawer dividers // Linen drawer organizers
Instead of:
Letting your boots wilt over like some sad flaccid somethingorother…
Upgrade to:
Boot inserts. They’re available in plastic, cedar, inflatable, and more, and they really will be the wind beneath your boot’s wings. Or whatever.
Try: Boot Shapers Universal, Black

Best boot inserts ever: a few magazines rolled up in my kids’ old soccer or baseball tube socks. A simple knot at the top of the mags helps hold the shape and creates a “tassel” for pulling the insert out of the boot. Just don’t fuss at me for still having socks lying around years after the kiddos played sports in school. I’ll get to their drawers one day. . . Best wishes!

I made my boot inserts out of retired jeans that I stuffed with pillows stuffing. I also heard of pool noodles!
