Monthly Mantra: February, 2021

February 1, 2021

“I TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR MY THOUGHTS AND MY ACTIONS.

BY DOING SO, I EMPOWER MYSELF TO CHOOSE AND BEHAVE DIFFERENTLY.”

I am responsible for me.

I am responsible to me.

Everything I do and say, that’s on me.

And everything I think; that’s me, too.

I might like to pretend that my thoughts and behaviors are someone else’s fault, or caused by some force outside myself, sometimes.

“Your mom is crazy! You can’t help but be riled up by her nonsense,” I may tell myself in weaker moments.

“That situation was so stressful. It was impossible to respond calmly,” I may say.

“I would make exercise, editing my belongings, cooking myself healthy meals, or spending time outside a part of my daily life, but between the kids, the dog, and the board meetings, I just don’t have the time!”

But then I remember that I only have the power to change what I take total responsibility for. My emotions, my thoughts, my energy, the way I spend my time–they are choices I’ve made and am making.

It doesn’t matter how many times I’ve lashed out or made excuses in the past.

I can decide how I really want to respond to emotional triggers. I can create space in my schedule for practices that quiet the crazy. And I can acknowledge that I need help to accomplish tasks that intimidate me. I can see that needing someone to hold me accountable and getting myself that support is me taking accountability.

Now, more than ever, I understand that taking good care of myself and preserving my peace of mind is critical not just for myself, but for those around me. I see the negative impact that my getting upset and spreading negative energy around my family and my workplace has. I acknowledge my free will, which allows me to respond as I choose and to use my resources as I see fit.

Today, I own my responsibility to clear the emotional and spiritual gunk that has accumulated in me along the way, and that is blocking me from responding how I want to respond.

Today, I choose to see responsibility as power, and power as work, and work as love.

Today, I take accountability for me.
