Monday’s Meditation: On Getting Started
Starting a new project of any kind can feel daunting. We want to feel prepared going in. We want it to look perfect right away. And we want to put our very best versions of ourselves and our work out into the world. But the truth is that you will never have all the materials, resources, skills, knowledge or experience as you would like at the beginning of any endeavor. And how could you? It is only through the doing that you are able to gain all those things you wished you had when you first started.
Start where you are. Don’t think about what has transpired before, or what might come to pass in the future. Do not ruminate on how you could have avoided being in a particular situation from the start, or how you wish you were in a different position now. You are where you are with everything in your life- your relationships, the state of your home, your career. You can always change anything, but you have to start exactly at the place where you’re at right now.
Use what you have. Do not waste time wishing for skills or resources that you don’t yet have. What you have right now is enough to get you started. It may not be enough to carry you all the way through, but it is enough to get you started.
Do what you can. Beginning where you are, using what you have, perform the task to the very best of your current abilities and means. Devote the most time you reasonably can to the project, exert as much energy towards it as you can afford. The only guarantee is that by starting in such a manner, you will get closer and closer to your vision of how you’d like things to look.
This has got to be one of my favorite reminders. I can’t think of a scenario where this quote doesn’t apply. I want to use an example to explain it, but it’s as if it’s so fitting for every one, that I’m unable to.
Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.
The end.
P.S. Let’s all take a moment today to honor and appreciate the brave soldiers who have fallen to protect this incredible country of ours. They are heroes forever.

Thank you for posting this! I e-mailed someone to accept an internship literally ten minutes ago, and even though I’m thrilled and excited about it, I’m also quite nervous. This was a really great reminder, so thanks! 🙂

This is a lovely reminder Annie; it is often so much easier not to start + make up excuses on why you shouldn’t, but I love how you have given all the reasons as to why you should start now and not wait. Love this post xx
