No Pantry? No Problem! Here Are 6 Ways To Fake It
The matter of a closet-less bedroom has been thoroughly unpacked around here. The culinary equivalent, however, that of a kitchen lacking a proper pantry, has received scant attention in comparison.
I was in the midst of a whirlwind move-in last week, and about halfway through unpacking the contents of my client’s kitchen it dawned on me: “Hey, turns out there’s no pantry.” (It’s a little like discovering the naked emperor.)
The pantry-less kitchen is a storage dilemma that seems to be growing increasingly popular as of late, I regret to say. As city-dwellings shrink in square footage, and open-concept kitchens become the trend, the traditional pantry is beginning a relic of a bygone era.
What’s a cook whose hands may be tied by their landlord, by their budget, or by their spatial means to do??
You identify a sliver of open floor space and fudge the bit, is what.

When we moved into our new place at the beginning of the month, not having a pantry was my biggest concern. The only logical space for it couldn’t fit anything deeper than 11.5″, which made finding the right piece extra challenging. (Otherwise it would be partially blocking the back door.) We ended up getting an IKEA Billy Bookcase with Oxberg Panel/Glass Doors. Not the most exciting piece of furniture we’ve gotten for the house, but oh my goodness, it’s been such a lifesaver!
