Children’s Books Storage: On The Wall Vs. On The Shelf

April 25, 2013

Here’s the dilemma of the day: storing children’s books on walls via ledges ledgeswall bins and plate racks and such as opposed to on bookshelves.

Now, on the one hand, I’m inclined: I happen to be of the opinion that there are few things finer than those really great children’s books, and in fact I often prefer them to ones created for the grown-up set (giving each other picture books is actually a “thing” in my family, though we are all well into adulthood. This has led to many well-intentioned moments wherein my parents gift friends of mine children’s books and the recipient reacts in utter bafflement all, “You got me Paddle To The Sea?” but that’s a story for another day).

Children’s books are a little bit of magic, and I heartily endorse their ability to pose as art.

Really, what more deserves being the main display in a child’s room but the covers of many delightful and sneakily ethics-filled story books?

And then on the other hand, there’s that incessant muttering: reallyy not a space efficient storage method. Definitely has the potential for books toppling all over the place. You could fit about seven times more books and actually be able to see them all if you just put them on a shelf, you know.

So now I’m at a loss, a roadblock on the path to decisiveness and I just can’t go on unless I hear your opinion on the matter.

So, what is it? Cute and clever? Or waste of space and stuff?

Annie, My thinking is that putting the books on a shelf helps promote the “out of sight, out of mind” theory…and, we want to encourage the enjoyment that comes from actually reading them!!! I vote for the dish/wall rack type display.

Can’t we do both? I have a number of littler ones and our bookshelf of picture books is overflowing.. I plan on adding a display rack to their playroom and simply rotating. I have found that they find one they like and that leads to getting more off the shelf anyway.
