Despite the advancing technology of dishwashers, dish drying racks continue to be a staple in kitchens ’round the globe.

Why? Because there are still times when you only have a few dishes to wash—a teacup and saucer, maybe. And the dishwasher seems extravagant when you might easily rinse and swish yourself. Or, you actually care for your knives (as I’ve heard rumors you’re supposed to?) and wash them by hand. Or you have other things you don’t entrust to the dishwasher: china, silver, baby bottle nibs, those kinds of things.

Even though I’m sorry to tell you they’ve officially concluded that washing dishes by hand uses more water than does running the dishwasher, there is still nonetheless a time and a place for a good old fashioned hand washing.

If only your dish drying rack weren’t such a countertop monstrosity. If only it didn’t take up so much space, advertise its presence quite so loudly, look so utilitarian and…plasticy. Am I right?
