Weekend Assignment: Decanting Spices

October 1, 2015

I know, I know; I’ve already done plenty of weekend assignments relating to the kitchen. I don’t know what to tell you; when a project is this painless and this satisfying, you got to do a post on it.

weekend project: decant all my spices into uniform jars.

It went like this: a couple of weeks ago my bud JoJotastic and I were chatting about what supplies I should bring over to her loft (I’ve been helping her Live Simply, obviously), when she goes, “I want to get mini spice jars so they all match. If i tell you how many i need… could you bring them, too?”

Could a person possibly propose a more exciting notion to me?

I was like, “That’s the best thing I’ve ever heard.” Because it basically was.

Her number in tow (plus a little room to grow), I headed to the store, scooped up 25 spice jars, a mini funnel, and a pack of spice ready-made labels.

Then the spices, terribly un-matching as they were, all got transferred into our uniform jars, identified with a label and bam! Like aromatic, flavorful soldiers they were.

We both decided it was a total improvement and “the best thing ever,” as one is wont to do.

If the look isn’t enough to sway you, how’s about the fact that buying spices from the bulk section is usually cheaper per ounce than buying whole jars of spices? Right? Bet that got you. And not only cheaper–when you buy spices from the bulk section, you get to choose how much of any given spice to take home.

Less waste, fresher spices, uniform vessels. Order, beautiful order.

Consider it assigned.

You will need:

  • A funnel. Since you’ll be using this system going forward, it’s a good idea to make sure you have an actual funnel, rather than having to repeatedly curl up a piece of paper.
  • A labeling system. Options include: ready-made labels like we used (side note: these seem to get pretty lousy reviews on Amazon; we had no issues with them whatsoever), chalk stickers (I swear you don’t have to get the chalk paint and brushes out, no matter how many Pins start to convince you otherwise), standard sticker labels from the office supply aisle in appropriate size and shape to match your jars, a set from amongst the zillions available for download/purchase that suit your aesthetic (Lia Griffith, for example, has some lovely ones, as does Martha.)

I want to see your spices! Post a picture to your social media things if you do the project, and tag me, Eloise. (actual links on sidebar.)

Don’t laugh – I bought 28 spice jars about a month ago. They are still sitting in their bag at the bottom of my pantry. I have had several late work-nights and not had a free weekend since then to tackle this project, but this Saturday is looking promising. Yup – this stuff make me happy, and thank you for the reminder
