9 Ways To Help Other People Live Simply

August 6, 2014

A must read. The 9 ways we can all help each to live a little more simply...

1. Honor your commitments (or, be a person who does what they say they will).

2. Be on time.

Whether it’s a business meeting, an appointment, or even a lunch date, if someone has factored you into their schedule they are giving you their time, a precious commodity. Do not make them waste it.

And furthermore, realize that your tardiness may actually throw their entire day off schedule, causing them to be late, unorganized, or unable to accomplish all they had planned to.

3. Give with intention and thoughtfulness.

Take time to really think about the kind of gift another person might like. Do your best to ensure it reflects their taste, not merely your own.

(More on gifts herehere, and here.)

4. Be conscientious with your hand-me-downs.

Before you offer your friend or family member that bag of outgrown children’s clothing/that basket of books/ that furniture item, ask yourself:

Have they asked for this? Have they ever hinted or suggested that they might one day like to have this in the event I no longer do? And, because I can often see things clearly as an outsider: What do I know about the reality of their situation regardless of what they might have expressed in words or actions? Will this gift fan the fire?

How much of this transaction is about me not wanting to face the pain of actually letting something go, as opposed being motivated by a legitimate need for it on the person’s part?

(More on this whole issue here and here.)

5. Relay the most relevant information. Exclude the rest.

6. Be truthful.

You serve others most when you tell the truth. Say it lovingly, always, but say the truth. It’s your duty.

7. Respect boundaries.

8. Ask what’s important. Listen to the answer.

9. Take care of your self.

The best way to show up fully for others is always, always, to ensure that first you nourish yourself.
