The Ideal House Design: Hidden Doors & Secret Rooms

February 28, 2018

If we could build the perfect house from scratch, what would it look like? What features would it contain? Let’s have ourselves a little daydream…

It seems as though this has been an exceedingly long week and it’s only Wednesday (anyone else?). Early-week-fatigue calls for one thing, and that’s an injection of delight. Ergo, today’s post.

Because what–but what–could be more delightful than secret doors to hidden rooms? Probably a bunch of things come to think of it. So, maybe positing the topic in a hierarchy of delight wasn’t the most prudent way to encourage scrolling.

Still, I don’t care how cold your heart or how epic your top-tier delights, you just can’t try to tell me that secret doors leading to hidden rooms aren’t the surest way to introduce whimsy into one’s home.

Do you need secret doors and rooms? Certainly not. Unless you’re in the habit of hiding treasure, hiding from enemies, or needing to head underground for water supply during times of prolonged siege.

(Sometimes I do advocate in favor of possessing what you don’t truly need. If I played only one note, you’d have clicked off the blog page long ago.)

But can you desire the antiquated charm and secretive security that a hidden door and room provide? Can you adore the idea of your space being able to do a little magic trick? Can you relish watching the initiated visitor search for the concealed pantry to no avail, and then get to shout all valiantly, “FAKE OUT” as your wall of cabinetry gives way to a butler’s pantry sort of Narnia?

In the words of so many annoying (probably) millennials: Hellz ya.

I really had to laugh when I read this because believe it or not, I was just thinking about this just yesterday! I always loved those bookcases that just opened up into a whole other room … ( this could also explain my love for The Lion, the witch and the wardrobe!!) 🙂
