It’s The Small Things: Fuzz, Lint, Pill Remover

June 18, 2014

{A quaint series on the small things making my work and life happier and easier.}

We really don’t give ourselves enough credit is the name of this tune.

I mean, it takes a lot of effort to be shepherds and here we are, getting all of the pills and none of the credit.

I’m here to tell you: what the collie is to the farmer is what the Gleener is to clothes.

This little handy tool is a closet essential! The secret to keeping clothes looking as new as the day you bought them!

In English, for those of you who aren’t following although let’s be real if you’re a long time reader you know that’s part of the magic, is that I recently picked up a new fuzz, lint, pill remover.

A client master closet project produced no less than five garments desperately in need of de-pilling, which is to say they had gained a good inch in thickness by way of their pills.

I promised I would provide the necessary tool upon our next visit and we bid adieu.

Then I sort of started wondering about sweater shavers, and whether the one I had was acquired by happenstance, or because it was truly the best the market had to offer. Only the best for Live Simply clients and such.

I queried the saleswoman at The Container Store as one will; she replied that while she had the same version as I, the alternate offering I had in hand “could not be kept on the shelves for months after its release.” She was all, “People would come in and buy one for themselves and then come back the next day and buy five more to give as presents.” Well, sold. Sometimes you just have to hand it to a successful salesperson. You done got my dollars and whatever.

It might also have been the fact that Gleener is sans battery-power, because I have enough things in my life as it is to worry about keeping charged. And it could have had something to do with The Gleener coming with three attachment options, each one suited for various fabrics. When you’re dealing with other people’s belongings, you can’t be too careful.

So I buy the Gleener and take it with me to my client’s as planned.

She used it first, in fact, while I ran around her in circles doing this and that.

For a self-proclaimed half-interested-at-best-domestic, she was mesmerized by the thing. And, simultaneously, thoroughly entertained by her own mesmerization.

Do you know she sat there for a good twenty or thirty minutes combing her garments and having just about the time of her life at it?

The satisfaction! The piles of wool shaved off! Look at the difference!

It was grand.

We hung up her things and they looked like new.

Then Gleenerman came with me to another client’s master closet. Was I mildly thrilled at discovering a good many of her sweaters were involved in a shedding process that seemed to be verging on ritualistic? Was I? Well?

For the next who knows how long because I went into a semi-zen-trance, I sat in a closet and sheared sheep. It was fantastic.
