Monday’s Meditation: On This Perfect World Of Contrasts

November 3, 2014

A post on the power of contrast.

Everything in this world has its place.

Each element serves as context for something else, and without each and every one we would be left unable to decipher the value or meaning of any.

We know by contrast. There is one of the most fundamental human truths.

We know depression from contentment because we’ve experienced, or witnessed, both states.

We recognize summer from winter because we’ve lived through, or seen evidence of, both seasons.

We understand wet from dry;

Discomfort from security;

Ease from dis-ease;

Simplicity from chaos;

In what feels most bizarre and somewhat counterintuitive, at some level we need both opposing elements in order to inform our perceptions.

Contrast is what makes it interesting.

The deepest essence of our self knowing rests in where we align ourselves between two polarities (not to mention how extreme we perceive those differing elements to be). And nothing, no technological advancement or addition to Webster’s or social media app or any other kind of thing will at some point be able to stand in for the equal and tangible representation of emotions or experiences that exist.

You are not obligated to live under the authority of any emotion or circumstance that you find to be negative. You are allowed to live your entire life on what you consider to be the right side of the street. And even still, you will not know it as that unless at some point or other, whether through personal experience or secondhand or distantly removed, you’ve walked the wrong one.

The goal is still the same: find what feels good and try your hardest to stay that course. And when unpleasant tides come your way, see them not as life’s efforts to sink you but to direct you, to provide you with clues, with context.
