Monday’s Meditation: On Owning Your Desires

March 14, 2016

There’s a common misbelief that’s held by so many of us, which is that we can’t have it all, the underlying notion being that we shouldn’t desire to have it all.

It must be some byproduct of being the fortunate denizens of a first world country, an awareness of how blessed we already are (compared to-) that holds us back from truly owning our desires.

We think it’s okay for us to intend a certain number of our desires be fulfilled, or a certain type, but certainly not all of them.

It’s as if we’re acting under the assumption that to own our desires would be akin to being greedy in the buffet line, taking more where others take less.

Except, it is not our business how much others deem themselves worthy of in life. And since the buffet in question has more than enough for each of us, our serving has no bearing on what is left for others. That slice of pie is for them, whether they take it now, or in twenty years, and even if they never do.

If we temper our authentic visions or desires in response to seeing those around us doing the same, we’re effectively holding both parties back: ourselves, of course, and our peers, who likely need us as a living example of what is possible.

You must live with integrity and you must give authentically of the talents and abilities that are within you–that’s how you earn your spot in the buffet line. When you do this, you become worthy of every goodness to be found in this world. You are allowed to desire everything that you do.  You are worthy of wanting it all, whatever it means for you.

Not only are you worthy; as an authentic giver, a person who in their particular way is serving humankind, you are meant to be cared for. The world intends for you to fill your plate, and wants you to be your most joyous, most authentic, most alive self.

What or whomever gave you the impression that the nature of the world is to dash your dreams or work against you? In fact, it’s just the opposite: the more you operate in authentic connection with the universe and with your inherent gifts, the more the universe supports you and your happiness.

So, who are you to want what you want?

Who are you to want a prosperous career, and a happy family, and good health, and fulfilling friendships, and more?

Who are you not to!?

You have been put on this planet, not to stand wistfully or resentfully by as others partake, but to participate, to give and take in equal amounts, and thereby be worthy of reaping the rich rewards that a less enlightened person might merely halfheartedly lust after.

If you are for good, goodness is for you.

If you give with joy, more joy will be given.

Carry on, flower.
