Monday’s Meditation: On Listening To The Signs (Or Not).

June 15, 2015

Are you listening to the signs??

In an intuitive and interconnected world as ours there are signs all around us at any moment. The universe speaks constantly, mirroring our thoughts in our bodies, our bank accounts, our relationships, and so on. It sends us messages about ourselves, our imbalances, about others, and about what kind of life feels best for us and what kind doesn’t.

The trouble is, we’re often so busy and distracted that we ignore these messages. Most of us hear them; we hear our knees telling us to take a day off from running, we hear an inner inkling about a business deal that alerts us something just isn’t quite right, we think we hear the faint calling of our spirits to their rightful purpose.

And then we carry on doing just as we did, thinking we know better, thinking the inkling must have been spawned by momentary weakness, selfishness, or that most unreliable–emotion.

We have become wary of interpreting signs, in fact, fearful of becoming loony-tunes who expect to find the meaning of life in the color of the next car we see, or a message about what job we should take in the pattern of our latte art.

But there is little downside to being guided by the signs we perceive. Any message we believe we see or hear is one we, ourselves, have imagined exists. As it comes from us, it is for us. As we have created it, so we need it.

Listening to the signs you perceive usually means straying from the path you’ve been heading down or veering from your comfortable routine. It means making a change, large or small. Awareness always comes with more work to be done because working is living and awareness is paying attention to being alive.

You might be able to sustain things the way they are for a while. Even a while longer from now. But ultimately, whatever sign you’re ignoring has the power to best you. The longer you don’t listen to the signs, the more severe the take down will be. It works like that almost always.

If you listen to your knees and take one day off here and there you might avoid the stress fracture that prevents all exercise down the road.

If you listen to that annoyingly keen inner whisper telling you that your job is making you unhappy, you might avoid the crisis that comes decades later that leaves you depleted, lost, and angry at yourself.

If you listen to the overwhelm you feel at having to organize your space and call in for support you might avoid an out of control, crazy cluttered home.

All around us: signs, messages, indicators big and small.

They are tauntingly apparent with hindsight; “There were signs I should have listened to all along.” Hurdles avoided, struggles relinquished, suffering released.

Your job is not to create or seek out signs outside yourself, but to heed those that appear involuntarily for you. To become more effective in career, more balanced in body, more fulfilled in life and relationship get better at listening to your signs.

You are not at the end. You are far from a lost cause. Your life is changeable, your course malleable; your will and your might, your own.

The signs may be blinking away like giant-pixelated Times Square screens for you right now.

Are you listening?
