Monday’s Meditation: On Being Tested

March 16, 2015

The best attitude for a happy, successful life.

When situations arise that are abnormally arduous, many of us are apt to say that we feel as though we’re being tested. It’s as if we’re aware that our next actions are being observed and catalogued; will ultimately play in front of us on some big screen as the determining factor of our soul’s ultimate fate.

Those moments do define us. How we respond to the events and changes that catastrophically flip our lives inside out creates us.

But the truth is that each moment is equally–which is to say, tremendously–as character-defining as the most heroic and horrific ones. Every second of this life matters. Every second is, as you will, a “test,” in that every action we take and attitude we adopt is a willing choice and a definite answer to a quiz which really only has two options listed.

Our response to life-halting times of trauma and crisis can be less the catalyst for all future decisions as it can be the result of the ways we’ve handled a zillion other smaller, more menial situations.

Because everyday occasions challenge us in unique ways.

It takes real grace to navigate the twitching aggravation of automated phone systems, bumper-to-bumper traffic, losing one’s belongings, dealing with washing machine repairs, and every other kind of logistical circumstance that comprise a vast chunk of our lives.

And it takes a person of real compassion to view the requests and expectations of others not as great sigh-inducing spit-wads of upset, but as welcome opportunities for us to rise to the occasion, surprise them with our deftness of tactic, and delight them with our overall commitment to showing up, listening to their needs, and giving with a happy heart, believing as we do, that each of us must surely be doing the best we possibly can.
