Monday’s Meditation: On Unabashedly Owning It

June 10, 2013

Last week I happened to arrive at my client’s house at the same moment as two representatives from a painting company. We stood on the porch together, the three of us, exchanging pleasantries and the details of our various professions. The woman told me how long their company had been in business, the areas they typically work in, and such and so on. She finished her explanation and then was silent a moment before proclaiming, “And we’re fabulous.” And it wasn’t obnoxious at all.

To be clear, that isn’t sarcasm. It really wasn’t obnoxious in the slightest. Quite to the contrary, her assertion was nothing short of entirely refreshing.

You must believe in the value of the services you are offering if you are to succeed. But when you believe in the value of those services so fully, when you know resolutely that the money or time or whatever it is a person exchanges with you in return for those services is worth every morsel, something magical happens– people believe you; they rise to meet you.

You know what I think the funny part is? The woman who declares “and we’re fabulous” is the minority. In the silliest of ironies, our self-driven, self-branded, self-focused society is still reluctant to own our excellence, our talent, our skill– in those words precisely.

Well not me since now.

I’m an organizational expert. I show up with my step stool and my cup of coffee all can-do energy and I help my client’s conquer their stuff, beautify their spaces, and gain clarity in their lives.

And you want to know something else?

I am frickin’ amazing at what I do. I am worth every damn penny my clients pay me and I deliver my worth everyday.

Why? Because I am uber efficient; I get the job done in a manner so thorough and yet so fast people have to look three times to believe their eyes. I am there to laugh and have fun, because people’s idiosyncrasies are funny and my clients learn to laugh at themselves with me, and even the ones who dreaded it in the beginning? They swear they had fun in the end.

I am invested and sensitive and stylish and flush with enthusiasm and I care just as much about the state of your space and your spirit as if they were my own.

Because I strive for excellence in every endeavor I undertake and I will do any certain thing including sweat, break all my nails, bruise my knees, rummage in dirt and cobwebs, haul boxes the size of me, and carry racks of clothes that weigh twice as much, even if the hangers start to dig their way into my palms if that’s what it takes.

Because I listen to what people say and I am fluent in “in between the lines.”

Because I take each and every client like a little bird under this great wing of mine, this wing so broad even I don’t know how I’ve managed to grow it in my short lifetime, and I just let them tuck in for a minute and follow my lead.

I do not merely “organize closets.” What I do is full-on life simplification, and I do it in a way no one else can. I fold with what feels like the blessings of the gods and I color code like I’ve been practicing since I learned the rainbow and I am nobody if not a total pro.

I have never been more serious: nothing would make me happier than to find a whole stream underneath this post of comments reflecting on whatever service, paid or unpaid, you have to give, about which you can state without a shred of reservation, “and we’re fabulous.”

Go.

I’m an amazing policy researcher. I know my shit and I’m great with getting people on board. Thanks for reminding me to remind myself! I just finished a job where my boss made me doubt, every day, my ability to do my job. I’ve recently changed to another team and am rebuilding my confidence brick by brick, with moments every day where I realise – it wasn’t me at all.

So – that post was AWESOME, inspirational, and very timely. Bookmarked for whenever I need reminding.
    Thanks!
