Loose Tea Leaf Storage

January 29, 2013

Not too long ago, I wrote a post called Tea Time, Storage Solutions in which I offered up a variety of ways to keep one’s tea bags contained. The post went over well enough with all but one crowd–the loose tea leaf drinkers of the world. “Where are the storage solutions for people who don’t have bags?” they lamented.

Alas, no specific tips for tea-bag-less folks were to be found. Until today.

Both bag fans and lovers of loose leaves should use air-tight storage containers in order to prolong the freshness of their beloved beverage base. Below you’ll find a smattering of such storage– and accessories to boot.

Almigh Red Tea Bag // 20-Ounce Glass Storage with Stainless Steel Lid // 1 Quart Stackable Square Clear Glass Storage Jar // Teavana Blue Tea Storage Tin // Perfect Tea Spoon // Twisting Tea Ball // Bodum Presso 34-Ounce Glass Storage Jar // Stainless Steel Canister Set

Whereas tea bags carry their heart on their sleeve- flavor on their packet (tomato, tomahtoe), loose tea leaves require labeling if removed from original (and potentially non airtight) packaging. Salvage the printed label by peeling it off or cutting it out and affixing it to your permanent storage container of choice.

Or create your own labels with cardstock and a hole punch. Avoid dealing with tape to apply labels, which can be more of a nuisance to remove when the contents change, and opt instead for some string. Wrap neatly around your jar or tin, and snip it away when new tea comes in.

Finally, if you’re a truly devoted loose tea drinker, do be so kind to yourself as to allocate a section of your kitchen for teas and its accessories. A drawer with dividers, as seen below, is a fail-safe option.
