Live Simply Loser: Sterilite Plastic Drawers

February 20, 2013

As long as we’re on the subject of miserably unfortunate organizing products, might as well swing right over to those deplorably feeble plastic drawers.

Oh plastic drawer things, how do I loathe you? Let me count the ways:

I loathe you for your utter lack of drawer track. You make me feel as though each drawer opening and closing is rather more like a slip and slide than a storage solution.

I loathe you for your treacherously sharp plastic edges and undersides, which constantly threaten to cut and slice raw flesh when attempting to lift and move.

I loathe you for your inability to support any substantial weight. Objects placed upon you weighing in at anything above two ounces will cause your top to sag to the point of convexity.

To be quite frank, I loathe you for your ugliness.

I loathe you for the depths of your charade, your pretending to pose as an actual set of drawers instead of what you really are: approximately three plastic lid-less buckets precariously slid into a shoddy plastic frame, occasionally accompanied by an optional four wheels to be attached to your bottom, at least 2 of which inevitably threaten to fall off, leaving you as nothing more than an off-kilter, lopsided pile of plastic which I would prefer to see shrivel up and recompose itself into many many bottles of seltzer water.

You are such a good idea in theory, and such a failure in reality, and for that I do not loathe you but resent you terribly.

Dear friends, I understand financial limitations and the value of frugality. I understand that springing for the legitimate storage option may be a large expenditure for you. Alas, I conclude this to be a case when saving up for the more suitable drawer selection is far wiser than blowing a few greens away on a rickety collection of plastic that may not break the bank but will break your spirit.

These are perfectly acceptable if you’re residing in a dorm room, and otherwise I cannot abide your utilizing them.

Over and out.

*Note:

What to do if you already own them:

– Don’t get down on yourself for choosing these. They’ve tricked so many well-intentioned shoppers in the past. You are a good person, I promise.

– Use them to store the smallest, lightest objects you own- think lip glosses, pens, paper clips.

What to do if you were just about to run out and buy them: I would recommend individual plastic bins or stacking bins over these plastic drawers any day. Get as many as you need and stack them as you see fit. Additionally, these stacking drawers are evidently a much better take on the plastic drawer than the standard Sterilite.

I hate these draws – they may organise some things but they are so ugly. I can’t even think of place they would look appropriate. Office, kitchen, laundrey – nope, nope and nope.

Agree! Are there any other inexpensive options? Or even expensive ones that hold several drawers and fit under sinks and in closets and what-not? Everytime I go to the container store website, a) I need resuscitated from sticker shock and b) I’m totally overwhelmed by the options – and c) not sure if what I have in my cart even works together. I generally just click off and go eat a cookie. Makes me feel better for being unable to complete the transaction.

Haaaaaaaaaaaaaate. I too fell prey to the lure of cheap organization, and regretted it almost immediately after. Now I only use them up in my attic where no one can see my shame.

We have so, so many of them. When you pick them up (empty!) they come apart, any thoughts on how to secure them together?
