Is Your Desk A Productivity Promotor Or Clutter Culprit?

February 10, 2015

I can’t tell you how many times I see very cluttered office spaces that have come as a result of ill-suited desks.

Common mis-matches include:

– Desks without storage + people who are of the out-of-sight-out-of-mind orientation.

– Desks with storage + people who are habitual space-fillers.

– Desks with storage + people that aren’t clutter-prone and don’t have a ton of stuff, but feel anxiety about not utilizing available space.

– Desks with storage that are big and bulky + people who rarely sit and work at their desks since they have an actual office.

-Desks without storage + people who live in small spaces.

-And on.

Desks are like nightstands, like shoes. They have to fit your habits, your living style, your needs.

A desk is more than a surface. It has to enable the flowing of your brain juices, and that, if you weren’t aware, is a rawther fragile process. If you want your desk to be a piece that promotes productivity, you’ve got to choose one that supports you.

Take some time to really think about what kind of worker you are, whether you’re more likely to stay organized if you have places to put things away easily, or whether you’ll be better off if aren’t tempted with spots to shove things. Think about whether you need a built-in file drawer, or whether you can comfortably fit a separate filing cabinet in your workspace.

Before you buy or otherwise obtain a desk, imagine yourself working at it. Consider what items you realistically require in arm’s reach, and what things you would put in various drawers or cubbies.

Then choose a desk that fits that criteria–whatever the budget, wherever you buy from.

Took the plunge and cleaned and purged my desk at work- not able to change the type of desk, but was able to change what is important to me to only be on the desk. It feels great– now off to the home desk that is filled with who knows what. Thanks for the push to make me the best I can be.
