The Ideal Kitchen: Appliance Storage

February 13, 2014
If we could build the perfect room from scratch, what would it look like? What features would it contain? Let’s have ourselves a little daydream…

If there is a noble goal in all the land it’s surely to keep ones kitchen counters as clear as first-world-humanly possible. Depositing the produce elsewhere is easy enough; ridding the miscellaneous piles of clutter that have a propensity to accumulate on kitchen counters harder for some, but altogether a non-negotiable in terms of acceptable Live Simply, but what about appliances? Those things you use day in and day out, which are often heavy and often large.

You might try capping the number of appliances permitted out on the counter-you know that old game-but still, they take up the space, and they take up the eye. And yet to ask the avid baker to haul her KitchenAid mixer from kitchen point a to kitchen point b on the regular feels unfair.

So, how to keep the appliances in a manner as convenient as countertop whilst maintaining utter surface vacancy?

The appliance garage. Coffee makers, mixers, blenders, choppers–effortlessly accessible and instantly out of sight. Now that’s an ideal feature.

Who’s with me?

Let’s all get them, weee!

This is precisely what we are trying to do for our espresso maker and Vitamix for the new kitchen! Builder says we may have code issues putting an electrical outlet in an enclosed cupboard – but we will figure out a way!
