Greeting Card Organization

November 27, 2012

There is a certain type of person—perhaps you might know her, perhaps you might be her—she’s a card fanatic. She amasses greeting cards as if she’s being paid to cultivate a collection whose varying tones, occasions, and images trumps even that of Hallmark. She likens herself a pseudo- Papyrus in the making, and if you don’t know that’s a direct reference to a card retailer and not a general term meant to describe the stuff they used to write on then you’re definitely not included in the previously mentioned group.

Truth is, I can’t bring myself to lay down the law on the cards. I abandon my usual stance about letting go of what you can’t identify an immediate need for, etc because I happen to possess a certain fondness for the greeting card, myself. I am equally culpable, though admittedly less well-equipped than my fellow card-connoisseurs. They’re lovely, you see. Some no less than gorgeous, poignant, frame worthy, even.

I can, however, comfortably admonish your keeping a cluttered collection of cards. There’s a difference, dears. Keep all the cards you want. But have some respect for the paper. The designs. Have you no shame? And such.

Translation: go get yourself a card organizer. Sort your cards by occasion, label your sections, insert the cards within, and that’s that.

Two weeks from now, when you find out your neighbor from across the street is expecting a baby, you’ll know exactly where to find the right card to celebrate the moment.

That’s living simply.

I feel so much better! I am obsessed with greeting cards! I have several organizers which have worked okay but when I did a major cleaning of my spare room, I found that I had hundreds of cards – bought over the last 15-20 years. I printed each category name on an 8.5×11 piece of paper then laid them out on the floor.

First I sorted the cards, then I matched envelopes – I’m not finished yet, but I’m getting there!
