DIY Or DI-WHY? – Clipboard Wall

January 3, 2013

Here’s the latest in interior design/organization trends that’s following my every move like the proverbial eyes on a portrait that seem to be staring at you no matter where you stand: clipboard inspiration boards. Clip-inspiration-boards? I’m not sure of the proper moniker here, but what we’re talking about are lots of clipboards hung next to each other on a wall and used to tack up pictures, notes, reminders, etc.

Naturally, the symmetry of the clipboards appeals to my OCD, as does the distinguishing; if you’re only working with one large board, all your scraps will be forced into neighboring, regardless of whether or not they pertain to each other in the slightest. Having lots of boards allows for a cohesion, as each board can be devoted to a distinct project.

Still, I’m on the fence about the overall look: is it doctor chic? Or cheap and bleak? What say we? Speak!

Update: this one, I think we can all agree, is chic.

Meh – they don’t really do anything for me.

I like the look of the clipboards themselves, but I’m not sold on the clipboard part. I think they function better when holding kids’ art or photos. I think it lends a casualness to the gallery wall.

I actually don’t mind this look. Less is more, the bottom photo is my favorite.

The only real application that I’ve seen this work well in is in design studios, and instead of actual clipBOARDS, there are just stand alone clips with fabric/ wallpaper samples. Not only is it a functional way for a designer to display samples, but it’s also pretty to look at. Otherwise, meh!
