Corner Kitchen Cabinet Solutions

June 25, 2014

We have, around here, oft lamented the dreaded corner kitchen cabinet. They’re miserable things and we’d very much like to have a word with whoever first (certainly unintentionally) designed them, and thereafter was content with his or her work (I’m speaking on behalf of you and me here).

I’ve provided what help I can: how to deal with the damn things, or, even better, a permanent solution for them. While previous discussions have centered around the lower version, the upper is no less criminal. In fact, the corner kitchen cabinet above the countertop is maybe a worse enemy. It’s a toss up. The upper cabinet does, however, offer a few unique solutions or substitutions that its yonder counterpart does not.

Let’s explore.

1. Forget the storage!

Sorry, I probably just gave you all aneurisms with that heading. But do take a gander at how well the corner kitchen area performs when utilized not as cabinet storage space, but as:

A home for built-in coffee machines, microwaves, TVs, et al. Now that is a grand idea in my opinion.

2. Ditch the doors

If ever there was an argument to be made in favor of open shelving, the case of the kitchen corner would be it.

Open shelving in the kitchen as a solution to the problem of the dreaded corner cabinet.

You get rid of the cabinets and suddenly you just have wall space to work with. Wall space + shelves = unparalleled accessibility.

Try to beef up your plate stacking skills homies.

3. Do better

Perhaps the easiest–or quickest–remedy for the corner cabinet is to merely get smarter about what you store within. Spices? Guys, come on. That’s like launching an unwrapped piece of spearmint gum into a grassy field and then trying to recover it, blindfolded.

Books on the other hand, there’s a smart idea; wide enough to fill the depth of the cabinet, uniform enough in size to stack neatly at the opening.

Get smarter about what you store where--cookbooks in a corner kitchen cabinet.

Winner winner veggie dinner.

Tell me all the ways you hate your corner cabinet. You know you want to.

I have come up with a small/BIG idea for my corner cabinets….I put rectangle plastic containers inside them, when you need to retrieve something or the cupboard gets messy you can take out one or all of them easily. It really works for me. I have fought with them for years, now they work for me. Just to mention mine are cut across, similar to the first two photos. And up above I have open shelving, I just love it!!! Love this website also, Annie, please help keep us all organized!

I still have no idea what to do with mine, I wish I could send a picture of how big this thing is… The front face of it matches up with the cupboard to the left and right and then that whole angle it made open up the corner cupboard and it goes all the way back and there are 3 levels I think it’s also high up which I am about 5’2″. There are so many answers for the lower corner cabinet but not much for uppers. If anyone has any other ideas or would like me to email a picture of what it looks like please let me know dkheileson@gmail.com thank you!!
