A Snack System

November 27, 2013

Before you sklathe off to your T-giving tables, I thought I’d share a little client project recently completed.

My clients (understandably) prefer not to have to deal with all the boxes and bags of varying materials and sizes in which snacks are packaged. The solution is to decant said snacks into food storage containers that are uniform in nature. While conformity is for the sheep, uniformity is for the Live Simplys. Uniformity in container creates a cohesive feel to an otherwise variant collection, thereby achieving a splendidly neat effect. (These particular containers since discontinued; similar versions here and here.)

The only trouble with the scenario at hand is the matter of identifying the goods. Like, were those the rice crisps? Or the rice chips? Or! Maybe they were the thin crisps with salt and pepper? Etc. The original packaging, nuisance or not, does contain the dirty details somewhere. I mean, even if you have to complete a mac n cheesy word search or follow some animated character through a tiny square maze, you’ll eventually land on: the name of the stuff that’s inside here.

Erasable labels applied to the fronts of the containers provide a way to capture the details upon decanting, before tossing out the original packaging in good conscience. Because the stuff inside is constantly changing (unless you have enough containers to accommodate every possible purchase from the grocery store, in which case, no) the erasable labels also allow for ultimate flexibility. Label it dry roasted almonds one week and TJ’s dark chocolate peanut butter cups the next. No muss, no fuss. Except for the fuss of the children harking at you to give them the M & Ms they can clearly see on the top shelf.

There you have it; a snack system, sorted.

p.s. These particular erasable labels have been on my radar for quite a while, but this was my first time ever actually using them in the flesh. I was doubtful, admittedly, all, “Sharpie? Really? You’re telling me I can write on this thing with my sharpie and then just wipe it away?” I did a test on one of the bitty sized labels in the pack and was all giddy when a big fat eraser make it as though “Cheerios” had never been scribed. The only rule is never use a pencil eraser, as that belonging to a number 2. Otherwise, permanent marker is what is called for, not to mention they’re dishwasher, microwave, fridge and freezer safe. Come on! What more could you ask for in a label? Me; zilch.

I am trying to switch from plastic to ceramic or glass containers. Do you have any suggestions for good glass containers? I have a few round ones but I feel like I cant use up my small space as well with them because of their shape and inability to stack well.
