The credit for today’s post goes entirely to my client, who independently elected to replace the large floor basket filled with stuffed animals in her soon-to-be-son’s nursery with a large lidded floor basket.

So the other day I peeked my head in there, noticed that lid and was all, “Heyyyyy, spiffy!” Thumbs up, thumbs up. And then probably I did my really excited winky face I do when clients begin to get the bug.

There are certain storage scenarios that call most for a basket–times when a box, bin, or crate just aren’t quite right. It might be because only a basket is the look you’re going for (baskets have a certain organic feel, a kind of warmth and informality), or because for various reasons, the items you need contained are more suited for a basket than for any other sized- or proportioned vessel.

The very appeal of a basket is that it invites you to collect items without worrying about the manner in which they’re arranged within (seriously, just throw the stuffed animals in there, no one cares if they’re sitting up straight). When you combine that near effortless storage with a lid, well, it’s sort of like a busy mom’s dream.

I’m hesitant on the whole to encourage concealing; I’m all too aware of the fact that certain people take things being hidden away as an opportunity to let shit within get cray. But, used responsibly, a lidded basket can provide storage, the contains of which aren’t hidden, but merely not on display.
